Acne Myths

There are many myths associated with acne. Through this article, you are provided Acne Mythswith an overview of some of the more common acne myths.  If you ask a person about acne odds are that you will be told that acne is caused by inadequate hygiene, stress, poor diet or some other reason that actually may not be entirely or even remotely accurate.

Skin experts find themselves spending a great deal of time dispelling acne myths. The best way to deal with your acne condition initially is to better educate yourself so that you can make educated and proper decisions in regard to acne treatments. Common acne myths include:

Myth #1: Popping pimples is an appropriate way to get rid of them.

Fact: Avoid popping pimples always. Some people might suggest that by popping pimples will make them less noticeable and help them heal faster. However, this simply is not the case. Picking at or popping pimples actually works to push germs further under your skin. This actually will aggravate an acne condition and can even lead to infection.

Myth #2: Acne is caused by eating certain types of foods, including fried food and chocolate.

Fact: Generally, this is not a true statement. Diet can have some minimal effect on the outbreak of acne. However, diet alone usually is not the cause of acne. This varies depending on the individual. While eating healthy and balanced diet is encouraged for people from all walks of life, there is really no scientific evidence that connects certain foods to acne in all cases. Eating a balanced died that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, will improve your overall health and will help you have healthy looking skin.

Myth #3: Stress causes acne.

Fact: Generally, everyday stress does not cause acne. However, there are some instances in which abnormal stress may contribute to an acne condition.

Myth #4: Getting a tan will clear up acne.

Fact: Moderate exposure to the sun can help in the process of drying up some excess oils on the skin that accompanies acne. However, getting some sun will not prevent the occurrence of new acne. At best, a tan merely masks some of the obvious symptoms of acne. You also need to keep in mind that spending too much time in the sun can have other more serious effects on your skin.

Myth #5: You can get rid of acne by washing your face more.

Fact: While it is important to keep your face clean when you are afflicted with acne, acne is not caused by poor hygiene. If you are suffering from acne, you should wash your face at least twice a day – in the morning and in the evening.  Additionally, if you exercise during the course of the day, you should also wash your effected skin after your workout as well.  However, washing alone will not relieve you of an acne condition. Moreover, you must not scrub your skin hard when you are suffering from acne. That will only make the situation worse.

Myth #6: To avoid acne, don't wear makeup.

Fact: There is some truth to this statement. However, there are now products designed particularly for people who tend to suffer from acne.

Myth #7: Acne is just a little problem, not need to care much about.

Fact: It is embarrassing to have acne, thus can affect our confidence and esteem. It may even affect our social relation and job performance.

Almost all teenagers and some adults have to deal with acne at some point - but once again, by better understanding the facts and myths associated with acne you will be in a better position to make proper and beneficial treatment decisions.
